How Playing Lacrosse Can Improve Your Hockey Game

The Hockey/Lacrosse Connection

It has been said that anyone serious about Hockey should play Lacrosse too.  Many Canadian-born NHL players, including Brendan Shanahan, Doug Gilmour, Joe Sakic, Paul Kariya, Don Cherry, Gary Roberts, Adam Oates, Paul Coffey, Joe Nieuwendyk and Rick Nash credit Lacrosse in the off-season with improving their skills and bringing their game to the next level.

That is because both Hockey and Lacrosse are high-tempo, physical team sports that have similar elements to the game.  Both utilize 5 players and a goalie, 3 periods of play and a strategy of developing odd-man situations to create scoring chances.  Hockey players excel in Lacrosse because of the natural transition to the game.  In fact, Lacrosse uses most of the same equipment as hockey does.

Lacrosse can benefit Hockey players in the following ways:

  • Develop stick handling
  • Develop creativity in tight corners
  • Ability to read the play offensively
  • Develop strong defensive skills
  • Teach players to play both offensive and defensive positions and how to transition quickly
  • Teach players to play with their head up and become aware of their surroundings
  • Improve hand-eye coordination and increase the development and agility of both hands
  • Develop shooting and scoring skills by teaching players to shoot at and pick small corners
  • Improve strength and endurance
  • Reinforce the importance of quickness and agility around the net
  • Help prevent sport burn-out by playing a different, fast-paced sport
  • Encourage passing and selfless play; great for team building
